Cambelt Failure

1998 Audi A4 20v, non turbo

Has anyone had, or does anyone know if, when the cambelts snaps it is possible for the valves and pistons to escape any damage. Has the engine been designed with any clearances/tolerances?

Mines has just had the teeth on the belt wear out and there were no nasty noises, vibrations, etc. Only a loss of power.

I would be grateful if anyone with any experiences such as this could let me know how they got on.

If either your belt has snapped or jumped it is more than likely that the pistons will have hit the valves causing damage.

You say wear out? Do you mean that you changed it and saw that they were worn? If it has jumped round due to worn teeth you would know about it - it wouldn't run at all unless it moved only by a tooth.

hi ive just had the same problem ! 1.8 turbo a3 , my exhaust valves were all bent ! the cambelt did'nt snap but the teeth were stripped , all the inlet valves escaped undamaged !! thank god
