Engine Light has appeared?

I have a Y reg Audi TT, it had high mileage from its previous owner, but runs fine. I have had it since Nov last year and its perfect.
But over the last month a couple of things have occured and I need some advice, without having to go to a Audi dealer/garage to get it checked:

1) Today, the engine icon appeard on the right hand speedometer - it never appeaerd before, but am very concerend. As I say the car is running fine, I had a long drive at the weekend, but it only appeared after a very short trip. There are no noises from the engine and the car is running fine - is this an error or a serious problem?

2) The jets for the windscreen have packed in - we have checked there is no blockage - the headlamp ones work fine - any suggestions?

have you dropped your clutch in a violent way? (if its manual) it happened to be a couple of times, if i stall the car or otherwise dropped the cluth too hard, the check engine light comes on. if the light isn't flashing, it's not a vital issue, says audi dealer.
