Question Engine Light has appeared?

I have a Y reg Audi TT, it had high mileage from its previous owner, but runs fine. I have had it since Nov last year and its perfect.
But over the last month a couple of things have occured and I need some advice, without having to go to a Audi dealer/garage to get it checked:

1) Today, the engine icon appeard on the right hand speedometer - it never appeaerd before, but am very concerend. As I say the car is running fine, I had a long drive at the weekend, but it only appeared after a very short trip. There are no noises from the engine and the car is running fine - is this an error or a serious problem?

2) The jets for the windscreen have packed in - we have checked there is no blockage - the headlamp ones work fine - any suggestions?

Thanks in advance..

have you dropped your clutch in a violent way? (if its manual) it happened to be a couple of times, if i stall the car or otherwise dropped the cluth too hard, the check engine light comes on. if the light isn't flashing, it's not a vital issue, says audi dealer.

Same things just happened to me. I had my mechanic read the code and it turned out my 02 sensor went bad and I had a vacuum leak somewhere. I'm taking it to the shop next week, but the guy said it was minor and unless the engine light is flashing I shouldn't have to worry. He said something as simple as not having the gas cap on tight enough could even trigger the check engine light.

My MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) came on solid this week as I was leaving for work... I guess its good its not flashing??? Car seemed to run fine, I stopped on the corner and topped it off with gas and took it straight home and parked it in the garage. I turned it on yesterday and its still lit. From what I understand, it can be almost anything, down to a burned out bulb.

not a bulb, but could be any thing with the car engine. most likely fuel/air ratio or exhaust composition triggered a sensor. the damn thing will stay on. mine went away but came back yesterday. nothing to worry about as this is the 3rd time it came on. some times it goes away by its self.
if you like, spend like 15 bux on ebay to get one of those cables & software and have ur laptop read the OBD II computer.... no biggy

where can I get the software cheap/free? and which cable do I need??

I started it yesterday and the light was off. I drove around for hours, no light... drove it this morning-- no light. While I was out yesterday cruising around, I took it to AutoZone-- they read and reset codes for free... I had them read the code: P0118... so I bought the part for $7... not sure how to put it on, but the light hasn't come on since last week, so I may take the part back. Its an engine coolant temperature sensor.

Maybe there was a bubble in the line?

try Ebay, the software should be included.
i doubt its a temperature senor, the thermal sensors for engine coolants has its own lil light. if you do buy the cable & do that ur self, be careful what u delete. the mechanic guy i used deleted my seat belt signal, now the lil light doesn't come one when i dont click in
i think i'll buy a reader my self & the diffult part: reprogram the seatbelt back into the computer!

if u live in canada, crappy tire has a full reader but its alot more expensive than ebay cable. the computer runs at 299.99
