Default In car motion sensor question.

I just bought a TT 225 2001.
I have had the alarm go off on me when I was just
in the car with the car turned off.
Then someone told me about the button in the compartment
below the ashtray.
It has buttons for the gas cap, tank, and the interior motion sensor.
However, when I push the interior sensor button, it fails to light up.
Does this mean it is not turning off the interior sensor?
How long does it take before it turns on?
When should i push the button?
Any help on this would be appreciated. I just don't want the alarm to go off again when I am inside it.
