v.loud rear grating noise tt quattro- any ideas?

bought my first tt (225, quattro, 02) 3 days ago.
Just on way home tonight and loud grating noise at rear started.
manged to get home in thunderstorm (2 miles further) so hope haven't done any more damage!

checked tyres and underneath- fine.
only does it when moving- no warning lights and service bit says ok
revs up fine in neutral
may be to do with drive, don't know

any ideas as don't want some expensive place telling me i need something when i might not do.

would appreciate help, joanne

just had a mechanic to look at and he says 'suspect rear diff' and not o drive it
how big a job is it and how much does it cost?
only bought this bloody car 3 days ago!
