I just purchased a 2001 tt 180hp conv. I ran it hard and had it inspected previous to buying and had no problems. About 20 miles after transferring title, in a dramatic fashion, the engine light came on and there was major stuttering every time I pressed the gas - when I stopped it sounded rough like it would die. The light stayed on and stuttering continued for about 20 min.
Then the stuttering stopped, driving went back to normal, and 50 kilometers later the check engine light went off after turning the engine off a few times and letting it cool down 30 min. Anyone have suggestions? ![]() |

Thanks for the replies. I took it in for a diagnostic at the dealership and they said 2 things were broken: a vacuum hose $200 and the instrument cluster $1100 (the tach quit working).
I had both replaced and it seems to be running fine now but the check engine light is back on so I have to make another trip back. I'll ask that they run diagnostics on the coils... |

Hi, I have the same problem with an A3 1.8T 2001 I just bought. the previous owner didnt have problems but changed the coil packs after a recall from VW/Audi. After a week i started having problems at 4000-5000rpm, the engine just lost power, then back to normal at low rpms. Now when cold started the engine's jumpy and noisy. today the engine light came up. For what I have read in the forums this is a coil pack problem, can anyone help?

I think my problem differs a bit, when it starts to run rough it doesn't matter if it's at high or low rpms. After 2 more bouts I took it to another dealership and they recommended changing the mass air flow sensor, cleaning the throttle valve, and a new air filter (apparently mine was pinched in the housing causing unregulated air to get into the engine). Haven't made any decisions yet, total cost is around $1200. Does this seem right to everyone else? I'm going to change the air filter this weekend and see if it helps...
