Hi All.
my TT is broken!!! Overtaking an old lady in a nice little car, when suddenly loss of power, almost like the engine wants to go but wont, similar noise to running on 3 cylinders, and a bit rough!! plus the engine management light started flashing yellow.... i fitted an induction kit about 4-5 weeks ago, after i had fitted it i read that oiled filters can clog the MAF sensor, does this sound like the root cause of the problem? I am going to put back in my old boxed air filter after work and hope this works, will this also clear the management light? what else will i need to do, i will also disconnect the battery, dont know why i just think it's a good idea ! Please help??? |

Could well be a coil pack or packs have gone down, it happened to me when i was accelerating hard.
They are very prone to fail on the 1.8 T , expect to pay around £27a coil if it is that ..

Hey man, how are ya?
Thanks for your reply. cleaned the MAF sensor tonight and re-installed the old air box, no difference, still a bag of bones!! although engine light not flashing! left the battery disconnected for 2hours also What is a coil pack? Im just thinking this has happened before but only briefly, when accelerating hard through the gears, when i reach 5th or 6th is has done the same thing but only for a second or two! Where are these coil pack located? can i do this myself at home or is it a big headache to do? Thanks, Mat. |

If you remove the platic engine cover it will reveal the coil packs, they look like square plugs (4 of them ) pull them out one at a time with engine running with insulated pliers(or u could get a shock) if you hold it just out of the cylinder it sits in you should See a spark (ticking sound).
If no spark then the coil pack needs replacing , Probably only 1 on its way out if its not doing it all the time..

Hope you don't mind me butting in, here is a safer way to identify what cylinder is misfiring, disconnect one injector plug at a time, if there is no change in idle speed that will be the one missing, or, disconnect a coil plug (quite tight). I say this because I have seen someone get a shock from 40,000 volts and it ain't pretty! Also there is a chance that the spark arcing out on the cylinder head can blow the engine control unit because all that energy goes down the earth line back to the ECU, (seen this too) the above method will put on the EML but in the long run it'll be cheaper in wallet and body. By the way, cleaning the MAF sensor rarely works as it is quite a sensitive instrument. If you have access to diag equipment, value block 13 or 14 will give you misfire detection.

Hi Guy's
Thanks both for your information, even though by the sounds of it T-sport was trying to electrocute me!!!! ha ha The problem is now fixed, it was number 3 and 4 coil pack. Think i will still replace my MAF sensor due to using an oiled induction filter.... im an idiot and never should have used this filter. Thanks Again! |

thanks all for youor excellant tech info.
just to let you know, i am in the middle of trying to claim the money back from Audi. all 1.8t engines, made in 2001 and 2002 for seat, volkswagen and Audi had recalls on the coil packs in Germany and the States, but NOT in UK, they chose to only fix those that broke....how unfair, anyway due to my car being an import (southern Ireland) (hardly an import....just a ferry crossing) they will not re-imburse me! how **** is that, Germany recall 850.000 thousand vehicles, the Uk only decide to extend the warranty on the cars bought in these years!! |
