Thinking of buying a used Audi TT convertible

I am looking for a sports car. I've been looking at Miatas, MR2s and others but I really like the looks of the Audi TT. I've searched the forums to find out more about the dependability of Audis and I found this posted on this forum in July 2007.

The author is asking the same questions that I would like answered. But alas, no one answered his questions.

So I copied and pasted his original post here in hopes of having better luck.

About the only other questions I would have are how dependable is the Quattro AWD and how expensive is it to fix?

How much does it cost to replace the clutch?

"hi, i searched the forums but there are no threads that really gather the information id like to know.

i am looking to buy a used 1st gen Audi TT (98-06) and i have some minor questions if you guys can help and answer.

1. what is the best year and model to buy, and what are the advantages and disadvantages to AWD as oppose to the FF in terms of racing. im sure the AWD can track up the mountains better and also have better handling, but how about launching and speeds?

2. what are the main differences between the years? Any powerplant reconstruction or improvement? any difference in interior and exterior designs?

3. And the last and most important question. how are the reliability of these cars? are there any known problems or issues that are common amongst many TT owners? The TT's im looking at are going to be having around 60K-100K miles on them. Would you recommend not going with this option, due to overwhelming maintenence and poor reliability? Or are these cars bullet proof and i wouldnt have to worry much about them at these miles, other than to maintain regurarly.
