I am contemplating buying a new 3.2 DSG TT?
What do people think?
not much more power than the 225?

i've driven both... the 3.2 is much more powerful than the 225TT

Downsides:

-DSG only (no manual)
-tune-a-bility: there are very few aftermarket proformance parts out for the 3.2. the 225TT is mure more modable.

Why is that? Is it just a function of time, that the 225 has been out longer and the market has produced the goodies for it?

eh.. a little of both....

Reasons:

1) the 3.2 is available in 2 cars - R32 and TT. The 1.8t is available in SEVERAL more platforms making it more economical to make parts for it

2)the boost on the 1.8t is set very low stock. a simple ecu upgrade will give you +30-40 hp. a chip on a 3.2 will give you maybe 15hp.

3)the 3.2 TT is pretty new

4) I've read that the DSG transmission can only handle up to ~300hp w/o upgrades

5) no true manual = less enthusiasts buying them

6) the simple fact that turbo cars are easier to mod than normally aspirated ones

7) Price - the 3.2TT is almost an entire price bracket above the 225TT, making it more of a status item. Take the ~$5000us you saved on getting a 225TT and put it into the engine, and you'll have a much faster car than the 3.2TT

*i'm not saying the 3.2TT isnt an awesome car, i'd take one in a second. If you're planning on keeping your TT stock, and don't want to mod it, the 3.2 is a great option.*

I am sure happy with mine. There was a recall on early 2004's so check before you buy. It only affected 145 units so unlikely. Clutch replacment. Now that I've had the car for awhile, I've finally learned how to work the DSG. It is definetly a change from the standard automatics. It drives much better (easier in my opinion) when using the tiptronic system. The shift by wire controls on the steering wheel are awsome. My only complaint is the tires. I have the Pirelli 225/40ZR-18's and with only 9200 miles, they are showing the tread (yellow lines inbedded in the groves) ware markers. Since I'm a high mileage driver, I'm evaluating some all season tires that should work well and provide extended life.
Any decision you make i.e. 225 Turbo or the 3.2 is a good one. Best of luck.

I didnt get around to thanking you for that reply. Makes alot of sense. My normal sense of selection is based on aesthetics and got to say, my TT is a little bit of a sheep in wolfs clothing. I wouldnt mind upping the performance to match the looks.

The K&N air filter is going in this weekend. Been driving now since Monday from the service center. Will be interesting to see if there is a notable difference, however small.

I have a 3.2 and I love it. Not as tuneable but a great ride with a stiffer suspesion setup, BIG brakes and better looks. I much prefer it to my 2004 1.8t. I just got tired of riding the boost. High speed drives were great but in traffic it was a pain. Too weak down low.

The car feels great around town (and tight country roads), more useable low end grunt. The sound is glorious, especial when you get it wound up. A great angry bellow. The motor and tranny are a good match.

I like the DSG but I wish it was fully manual like the UK unit. The DSG is not at all like a Tiptronic which feels loose because it is a standard automatic transmission. It IS a manaul tranny, you can feel the direct connection on deceleration just like a fully manual car. This transmission has recieved more rave reviews than any other system (similar technology in Bugatti etc). If you don't like this one, then you don't like the technology.

There are very few good mods for the car. One of the best is the Haldex unit mod. It pushes more power to the rear wheels under more circumstances. The others are chips although the gains are not huge. I think the increase in revs might make it more fun though. The two stage exhaust seems to rob a bit of power too. There is a cheap and easy mod for that.

This guy has an amazing car. Check it out. The DSG unit has a new TCM but it is coping with a crazy amount of power:
