You'll probably struggle to insure your car if you claim it back as salvage as most insurers ask if your car has been involved in a serious accident or previously written off. Any insurance you do get will have a higher premium on that car.
My advice is to cut your losses and run. Be thankful that you yourself weren't seriously injured in the shunt and treat your car as a mechanical device that can be replaced rather than something to fall in love with.
I don't wish to appear overly cold but if nothing else I'd be really worried about the safety of my car after such a bad crumple - e.g. what would happen if you were unfortunate enough to be in the same kind of accident again? The metal will be weaker and you may not come out so well.
£4,000 does sound low but you can normally negotiate a bit with your insurer to get a better price although you'll never get back the amount you've spent on it.
