I've had this problem on my 1.8t a6 at 80k miles.
Initially it was very random, usually after a cruise on the motorway and then pulling off and stopping at lights etc.
Then it became more regular to the point where if the car was sat idling for a while it would become noiser, so I stopped using it, took it to the garage and it turned out to be the oil pickup blockage, so they replaced that and the oil pump as a precaution, and all was well after that, put another 10k on it before selling it with no further issues.
