From what I have been reading the 1.8t seams to be one of the most tuneable engines around so you're in luck. With a lot of engines you need to start with the internals, with the 1.8t the engine is well up to the task. It almost seams Audi built it them restricted it.
Think air flow! if you can help the engine breathe easier it will be able to boost more and allow for higher power output. I have done quite a lot of reading into this because I am about to make a start on my car over the spring/summer. The biggest single gain I have found is software. A remap will set you back anywhere from £350-£500 depending on your needs. It is important to have a good "game plan" in mind and let your tuning company know. For example of you plan to upgrade your turbo down the line make sure the software you run with is able to support the new turbo in the future.
The biggest bang for the buck is defiantly a remap, a decent exhaust follows. A sports cat or a cat replacement pipe is a very wise move to compliment your exhaust. From some figures I have looked at Miltec seams to be a good buy for the money.
A turbo transplant is also a good option. The KKK ko4-15 seams to be a popular option. these can be had for under $800, but if you're from the UK like me you will still need to pay vat and import tax but it still works out cheaper then buying them from this side of the pond.
Sometimes what you do is determined by what the software allows or in some cases requires. Do your research and follow your intuition.
Enjoy the moding.
