I've got a 2000 4.2 & I'd reiterate someone else's comment & suggest you have the cambelt done if it hasn't been already. Unfortunately it;s outrageously expensive here. I had my thermostat fail at 139,000Km & to get to it you need to take the front off the car, then remove the serpentine belt & bits, cambelt & tensioner etc. While we were there we replaced the cambelt idlers, tensioner, cambelt, water pump (driven off the cambelt). Being aghast already I didn't do the cam seals, serpentine belt nor it's idlers (you can do those after). As it was it would have been NZ$3300.00 from the dealer :-(
One word of wisdom, take the "beauty" cover off the top of the engine & if you can see any braided cloth-covered vacuum hoses, go down to Super-Cheap Auto, buy a few metres of plain rubber 3mm vacuum hose & replace every straight bit of braided hose you can find, they perish & leak like a sieve causing major problems with the vacuum-driven components of the engin-management system..
