SIM access profile is available in all new Nokias and Siemens Benq phones, also the HTC PDA Phones support it as well.
Basically the phone prep clones the SIM and number from the phone and transfers it to the car, the GSM section of the phone is thenm shutdown so it no longer makes any calls, so saving on battery and not reliant on signal strength of the phone.
The car is now the phone and the roof antenna is used for making calls. SO excellent signal strength. Also text messages can be recieved on this system. The phone book of your phone is also transferred to the cars MMI for access to mumbers etc. You could also send text messages if you had the optional handset in the armrest (not the old motorola one, but a new handset).
If you have this phone prep and don't have a SIM access profile phone it will work in teh same fashion as you have now but over bluetooth only.
Pros
Great signal strength
No battery use of the phone
No Cradle required
SMS text messages viewable
Cons.
Text messages received in the car stay in the car, not in the phone
Received/Missed/dialled etc also stay in the car.
More expensive than the standard prep.
Limited number of phones, mainly all Nokias
