Default Temperature or Temperature Gauge?

This is really another question rather than an answer, and maybe I should post under a new thread, but...

I have my 80 tdi since new, and for the first 10 years the dash temperature gauge used to sit on exactly 90 after the engine warmed up.

Recently though, the temperature is indicated rather lower, maybe 80 or so, and I feel its got lower over time. This really started to happen after a coolant change, maybe even other work (possibly including servicing the instrument cluster for bulbs), and I didnt really think much of it. I suspect that its either the gauge or the temperature sensor.

The car drives fine as normal, but I was wondering...

If its the sensor, then is this same sensor used by the engine management unit to control the engine, and if so, is it likely to lead to the engine running inefficiently. Wonder if anybody knows this answer?

Anybody know where the sensor is exactly and whether its easy to replace (or test)?

Cheers,
