I had one of these, and I never got below high 40's for high speed motorway driving and low 40's round town. This is a great engine normally, and I would say you have a problem such as a bad MAF sensor or coolant temp sensor. Freezing temperatures do make a difference, but 35 MPG from this car is not at all normal.
