Hi,
I had a similar experience to the one you wrote about. In my case it was the gearbox that was going, I initially thought it might have been a spring because as you were, i was driving and then alll of a sudden there was a bang as if the car hit a bollard or something..

I got it checked and first guy said there was nothing wrong then, same thing happened again a couple of days later and it wouldnt go into a gear for ages..

Hope you get it sorted, but no doubt there will be something else that goes soon after.. i have a 99 a3 and have had nothing but problems with it.. but hopefully you are a bit luckier!!
