Default Loud thud then knocking noise

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had ever experienced this problem before....

I was driving along the motorway at around 60mph when there was a really loud thud and the car slowed a little almost as if it had hit something (that's what I thought had happened initially).

Im really worried now, its 2 weeks until Christmas and the last thing I need right now is my car breaking down or me having to spend any sort of cash on it right now.

When driving, if I put my hand on the gear stick I can feel a sort of grinding (only way I can describe it) and theres a knocking noise which seems to be gradually getting louder. Changing gears etc is fine and I dont think it has lost any power (actually, I was scared to try incase I did any further damage).

When I increase the speed, the knocking noise also quickens.

Has anyone experienced this? Or have any knowledge of what it could be?

It is a 99 Audi A3 1.6

Thanks in advance
