It appears you're absolutely right. I ran the tank to near empty and refilled for a drive to St. Louis. After a full day of driving and running around town today, I haven't had a hint of trouble. No check engine light and no sputtering performance. I have to back you up on the fuel additives. They aren't worth the money and can cause a lot of frustration.
