Question High Oil Consumption...normal?

Hi, newbie here with a question. I bought recently, one month ago, a 1997 Audi A6 2.8 Ouattro Avant. It had 93k and was well cared for including 3k motor oil changes. I changed motor oil/filter 1500 miles ago. Today I checked the dip-stick and was a bit surprised to see that the oil was down by one quart! I checked to see if there is leakage and there is none.

Upon search inquiry here and at another Audi forum, again I was surprised at similar responses to oil consumption. Not only the earlier 2.8 engine, but also the later 2.8 and a few 1.7t owners also reported high oil consumption. An Audi tech posted a response saying that Audi expects 1 ltr. oil consumption for every 1000k

Can this be normal, and if so why? And, will catylitic converters have less life span as a result of the high oil consuption?
