Anyone have any idea what the problem could be??

I had a similar problem with my 1995 Audi 100, it had a 2.8 and I got over 200k out of it without any problems expect for a cam sensor going bad around 120k. The problem you are describing is very close to what happened to my car but my engine light came on and I don't think I noticed any dark smoke. Any way it was under $100 for the sensor at the time.
