I would recommend taking the car to a friendly local garage and get them to pop off the interior trim/door cards and inspect the connections. High quality connectors should not cost the earth (Try Maplin or CPC websites). I always finish off ANY speaker connections in both car or domestic Hi-Fi set ups with a nice little squirt of Servisol Super 10 (Less than £4 and well worth it).

Thanks for the reply, I actually think I have fixed it. I pulled the head unit out and noticed there was some extra wiring, from an old hands free kit that was in the car when I bought it, I think. I removed this wiring and have not had a reoccurance of the problem, well not for the last 3 days since doing the work anyway.keeping my fingers crossed.
