Hmm, many thanks. From my previous experience in a non-approved dealership, it's very rare for components like this to go on anything from VAG Group, and from my current experience in insurance, it's even less likely for a manufacturer to admit that a component that failed under warrenty could have caused the accident!
I have to admit that my gut feeling is that the car was taken with a key - although I strongly suspect it was taken by a family member without our customer's knowledge
