Hi steve,
I had similar problems with my 03 car. Jon's advice is spot on especially on using the system periodically over the winter months to keep things lubricated. I had the re-gas done and it made no difference (temp still 20 degrees at the vents). I'm in the UK so I had the re-charge done at Kwik Fit who charge £44.95 and offer a reduce the temp at the vents by 10% or money back. However as ever the service at an Audi dealer is second to none and would always reccomend them as a first option - but unfortunately I couldn't justify the £120+ they wanted for the re-charge.
My symptoms were that the econ LED stayed on at the same time as auto on - in effect the compressor was switched off at all times therefore no chill just external air coming in. I had loads of conflicting advice given on what the problem was from compressor to control panel faulty. (people wanting to charge me anything from £200-£600+ to repair)
I got my money back from K-Fit as they couldn't lower the temp and by searching other forums came up with the solution. Replacement of the thrust sensor/high pressure switch on the air con radiator which solved the problem for a £40 parts charge (part no.8E0 959 126). The fitting was straightforward (15-20minute job depending on your spanner wielding ability) with basic tools (2 x 17mm spanners and some torx head screwdrivers). The system doesn't leak down (as some will try to tell you) when you remove the old part as the switch is protected by a safety valve.
I'd get your re-charge sorted first - but if this doesn't solve your problem give your dealer a shout or if you are up to a bit of diy give me a shout for a bit more detail.
After my re-gas and replacement of thrust sensor my air-con now blows at a chilly 6.2 degrees - much more like it....
I don't have the equipment to reset the fault memory - I'll get that done at next service hopefully but system still works all the same.
Let us know how you get on.
