Default A3 2.0 tdi sport sportback brake issue

My wifes 2005 A3 2.0 tdi sport sportback has had an issue since it was new with a grinding noise from the rear brakes. There is no evidence of corrosion on the discs at all. When it went in for it's initial service, I told the garage and they said they stripped and lubed the rear brakes to cure the prob. It lasted about 20 miles!

It's due to go in soon for a service and I drove it the other day and the grinding noise is much less pronounced, but there is an internittent issue in that the rear brakes appear to 'snatch' when braking moderately. (the feeling is not unlike when you are towing atrailer with a brake operated by the compressible towbar).

When i look at the rear discs there is still no evidence of corrosion, but there are uneven black radial lines on the discs radiating out from the centre to the outside, the lines will not wipe off. Is this likeley to be fractures in the disc or what?

Any explanations from fellow forum members?

Forewarned is forearmed and all that!

Cheers

Justin
