Most 'Eggy' smells from cars with catalytic converters are caused by an over-rich fuel mixture, unburnt fuel being oxidised/increased exhaust temperature causing 'Sulphur Dioxide' to be released from your exhaust.
The smell is a good sign that your CAT is still functioning, and just indicates the rich mixture with the pedal to the metal.
