To be totally honest, I dont believe that adding 15-20hps will make much of a difference anyway, especially since we are talking about naturally aspirated engines. In fact I believe that you might not even discern the difference should you be ginen to drive a 100 and a 115hps version.
The only solution is turbocharging imho. I own a 320i (150hps) and I dont find this car to be particularly fast, actually I d go as far as to say its sluggish. The other day I drove the Cooper S with 170hps and it felt sublime. I know , its lighter , 20 hps more and the such , but I believe the main difference is the turbocharger and not the adittional 20 hps. The torque you get is godly.
