Default Fault code extraction

Codes - as in fault codes generated by the onboard computer and displayed generically as a check engine light. I thought that there was a way to jump a wire somewhere to cause the check engine light to display a fault code. I’m still deliberating a previous post regarding a warm start problem on the ’86 CS Turbo 5000.

I had a Ford Probe Turbo GT that you could dump the check engine light fault codes. As I recall…there was an unattached wire that came out of a harness under the hood. If you grounded that wire and turned on the ignition, the check engine light would flash in a morse code fashion – long and short flashes. You could observe the flashing sequence and look up that sequence in a table in the service manual. For example, one sequence of long and short flashes would indicate an EGR problem, while another sequence would indicate a problem in another component. This was in lieu of attaching a diagnostic computer at the local shop.
