My dad first got an old beater '82 5x5 Coupe and we kept that for about 10 years. I watched as my older sister put it through any kind of hell you can possibly imagine. It got in 3 or 4 little mini wrecks and kept kicking. We never had to do anything but change the oil in that time (and there was a little spring that broke in the clutch that we replaced ourselves). I let it sit in the driveway for 2 years while I was in the Carribbean islands and came home and it started right up, the gas mileage was unbeatable, I had to fill it up about once a month and I drove all over. So I thought there was something cool there, so then after my sister gave me that car, she got an '85 4000s Quattro which was kept in immaculate condition. She got at 16 years old with only 50,000 miles on it. That car too got great gas mileage and grabbed the road in any weather condition like a spider. I loved it. Eventually she sold it to a guy, then I bought it back from him a few months ago. For a 21 year old car, there is almost no sign of aging, upholstery, paint, and the engine purrs like a kitten, the AC still works 21 years later! (I used it to actually, it was sweltering) That's quality. Most American and even japanese cars that I've seen don't have ACs that work after about 5 years for some reason or another.
Then about a month ago I had a few extra bucks and wanted something with a little more "show off" and got an all black '94 Cabriolet. Ok, so efficiency isn't stellar (it costs about twice as much to drive a month as my Quattro and doesn't have the handling or even seating capacity of it either) This thing hasn't been so well taken care of, and needs some minor work done on it. It doesn't burn oil or anything, but the transmission is starting to hesitate when shifting and there is some sort of leaky gasket somewhere, but all in all, for a 12 year old car, it's doing a lot better than most American cars. I've got a coworker with a '97 Dodge Neon that leaks oil about as fast as you can poor it in along with quite a few other problems.
